Abstract

The letter JA 303 from the Middle Euphrates is concerned with a legal case, whose verdict was pronounced by a king named Maziya. The present paper argues that this King Maziya and King MaziKarbuba mentioned in the Hieroglyphic Luwian inscription engraved on the Ankara Silver Bowl (ANKARA 2), are one and the same individual, and that this king was a king of Karkemi§. We will examine each of these sources separately, and then use them jointly in order to discuss the dating and context of the activity of King Mazi-Karbuba. On the basis of our conclusion, we will discuss the chronological and historical repercussions of this identification in Hittite Syria at the end of the 13th century BC.
