Abstract

TECHNICAL NOTE DESCRIBES AN EXPERIMENT TO MEASURE THE TRANSVERSE PRESSUREDIFFERENTIAL IN AN MHD FLUID FLOWING IN A PLANE DUCT AND SUBJECTED TO AN OBLIQUE MAGNETIC FIELD.THE FLOW FIELD IS CONSIDERED ONE-DIMENSIONAL, AND THE EFFECT OF THE ELECTRIC FIELD IS NEGLECTED.THE EXPERIMENTS WERE CARRIED OUT WITH SODIUM FLOW IN A STAINLESS STEEL DUCT OF RECTANGULAR CROSS SECTIONS AND PLACED IN A MAGNETIC FIELD AT AN ANGLE ALPHA#60 DEGREES.THE DUCT WALLS PARALLEL TO THE MAGNETIC FIELD WERE SHORT CIRCUITED.THE EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS, PRESENTED GRAPHICALLY, INDICATE THAT A LARGE PRESSURE DIFFERENTIAL CAN BE OBTAINED FOR A COMPARATIVELY SMALL MAGNETIC INDUCTION AND THE DEPENDENCE OF TRANSVERSE PRESSURE DIFFERENTIAL ON THE VOLUMETRIC FLOW RATE IS NONLINEAR.THE SIMPLE EXPERIMENT INDICATES THAT THE APPLICATION OF AN OBLIQUE MAGNETIC FIELD TO CREATES MEASURABLE TRANSVERSE PRESSURE GRADIENT WHICH CAN BE USED TO MEASURE THE VOLUMETRIC FLOW RATE OF THE FLUID.
