Loss of polarization entanglement in optical fibers due to polarization mode dispersion

Abstract

We perform quantum tomography measurements on polarization-entangled photon pairs traversing fibers with birefringence. We find that the entanglement disappears gradually if the birefringence affects only one photon of the pair. A theory supports our observations.
