Abstract

The use of silicone oil to treat severe proliferative diabetic retinopathy is controversial. Results from our study of 34 successful eyes indicate that long-term benefits from vitreoretinal surgery and silicone oil injection in eyes with severe proliferative diabetic retinopathy are possible. It appears that at least for several years, the functional results are relatively stable. In fact, in some eyes surprisingly good visual acuity was achieved and maintained.
