Abstract
In the recent years, the treatment of cancer has produced a substantial increase in survival times, transforming this condition into a chronic disease. In this context, greater attention has been paid to symptom control and the concept of quality of life has acquired a central importance in the global approach of patient care. Pain is one of the most frequently encountered symptoms during the course and its control may reveal itself difficult. In this paper, we review the strategies currently available to the clinician in the ambulatory and hospital settings, with a particular emphasis on the most recent developments in the field of opioid analgesics.
