Laser-free absorption and fluorescence spectroscopy of large molecules in planar supersonic expansions

Abstract

Absorption spectra, fluorescence excitation spectra and fluorescence quantum yields, Y, from the S1 manifold of 9.10-dichloroanthracene and anthracene cooled in planar supersonic expansions were simultaneously determined using a pulsed xenon lamp and a monochromator. The dependence of Y from photoselected vibrational states in the S1 manifold of 9.10-dichloroanthracene on the excess vibrational energy exhibits "step-function-type" behaviour, which is attributed to intersystem crossing intermediated by a higher triplet state.
