Abstract

Despite the long clinical use of l-DOPA, the exact mechanism by which this drug alleviates symptoms of Parkinson's disease is far from being fully understood. The present review summarizes recent findings about the mechanism of action of l-DOPA. Special emphasis is given to the most important phenomenon that limits l-DOPA's use in the treatment of parkinsonism -its declining effectiveness.
