N2 - Most of the multiphoton absorption steps in a large molecule excited by an intense radiation field may be viewed as transitions between quasicontinuous manifolds of exact molecular levels. It is shown that the assumption that the radiative coupling varies randomly with level indices leads to simple kinetic schemes. Coherent phenomena are absent if the average coupling vanishes, but may persist otherwise.
