    Abstract

This article examines the recent conviction of a member of the Israeli armed forces for shooting a Palestinian hors combat - and the associated media storm. Drawing on Stanley Cohen's analysis of denial, I argue that rather than marking a humanitarian legal advance, these events instead signify a disturbing public normative retreat.
