Abstract

Naveh discusses the relationship between the history curriculum and construction of Jewish-Israeli identity in Israel. The historical conflict with the Palestinians challenges conventional assumptions and produces professional disputes and public debates. Against the backdrop of the dominant Zionist narrative in textbooks, the debate centres on changes to the curriculum beginning in the 1990s. The inclusion of many issues relating to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict was met with opposition, and educators noted the difficulties of pedagogical integration within restricted course hours. The subsequent inclusion of Palestinian, Druze and Cherkessk sources in official history curricula, and practical omission from actual study, demonstrate that Israel is not yet ready to deal critically with this issue in its official education system.
