Abstract
A case of open irreducible dislocation of the interphalangeal joint of the hallux is presented. The joint was approached through a plantar incision. Interposition of the volar plate and the sesamoid bone prevented reduction. The volar plate with the sesamoid was reattached to the proximal phalanx. The advantages of the plantar approach are discussed.
