Abstract
The introduction of a kinetic equation for the interplanetary medium makes possible a quantitative test of several recently proposed mechanisms for limiting ion-temperature anisotropies in the solar wind. The results suggest that Coulomb collisions and an ion-cyclotron instability contribute comparably to the establishment of this limit under solar-wind conditions usually observed. Conditions favorable to the firehose instability seem to occur only on rare occasions.
