Abstract

Quantum analyses of the potential routes for proton transfer during the bacteriorhodopsin photocycle unexpectedly reveal three alternatives (Bondar et al., 2004 [this issue of Structure]) and clarify pervious findings. The implications of this result extend beyond bacteriorhodopsin, illustrating the value of theoretical calculations in understanding mechanism in atomic detail.
