Abstract

We investigate the interrelationship between the kinetics of the primary electron transfer in the reaction center of photosynthetic bacteria and the magnetic properties of the radical pair (bacteriochlorophyll dimer)+(bacteriopheophytin)-. We explore the consequences of large cancellation effects between singlet and triplet level shifts, and of the structural relaxation of the prosthetic groups following primary electron transfer. The consistency between the superexchange mechanism and the experimental singlet-triplet splitting of the radical pair is demonstrated.
