Abstract
The notion of interpretation plays a key role in various contexts in the theory of communication and related fields. This entry reviews the variety of ways in which interpretation is construed and accounted for, and traces the connections between interpretation and such key concepts and domains of study as pragmatics, rationalization, hermeneutics, and explanation.
