Interferon: an altered initiation factor (A hypothesis for its formation and action)

Research output: Contribution to journalArticlepeer-review

Abstract

It is proposed that interferon is a specifically oxidized, disulfide form of initiation factor(s); that it arises as a byproduct of inhibition of the initiation of protein synthesis by certain compounds; that is derives its specificity in extracellular form from specific glycosylation and; that it is directly responsible for antiviral activity. The hypothesis is based on a new interpretation of the extensive literature on interferon.
