Abstract
The nature of the charge distribution in the excited state of halide ions in solution was investigated by calculation of the oscillator strengths of their u.-v. absorption bands. Two alternative pictures were adopted for the description of the excited state: the electron-in-a-box model, 2 the hydrogen-like model,1 and the np5(n+1)s state stabilized by solvation.3 Fair agreement is obtained by application of the continuous model. Environmental effects on the oscillator strengths are considered. The limitations of the continuous model are discussed.
