Abstract

We investigate the effects of small instatons on mass levels of hadrons containing massless u and d quarks. The calculations are carried out within the framework of the MIT bag model. The result is a small decrease of the N and Λ masses and a strong increase of the η and decrease of the π masses. The various mass shifts are related by group-theoretic coefficients which we explain and calculate. We interpret the strong binding that we find for the pion as the term which turns that bag state into a Nambu-Goldstone boson.
