Abstract

In this study we show that the use of common scattering-angle gathers and traditional common offset gathers may not be adequate for interval velocity analysis in regions with complex geological structures. Through a detailed analysis of the summation process which takes place during the generation of each trace in the common image gather, we demonstrate how information on the structural dip is lost. We suggest maintaining this crucial dip information to improve the quality of the interval velocity analysis process.
