Abstract

The main focus of the research described is to provide support in the preliminary design stage of large bridges. It is in this stage that most major design decisions and concept selections are made, leaving a tangible framework for detailed design. The system is intended to aid bridge designers by providing them with fast retrieval of potential conceptual solutions relevant to the design problem at hand. The product of the research is not a self-contained design system but an aid that shortens the preliminary design stage. The system we are building can provide good candidate designs but does not guarantee their consistency or feasibility.
