title = "Implications of relativistic gas dynamics for neutrino-neutrino cross sections",
abstract = "We consider the properties of a relativistic Fermi gas. In particular we derive expressions for the flow velocities behind strong and weak shock waves. We use these results to consider the validity of attempts to bound neutrino-neutrino cross sections from the supernova SN1987A. Certain apporaches to such bounds appear to be invalid. We also apply this picture to a recently proposed scenario for galaxy formation in the presence of light neutrinos with large cross sections.",

note = "Funding Information: We benefitted greatly from the suggestion of S. Shapiro that we consider the generalization to the relativistic case of the treatment of Zel'dovich and Raizer, from H. Van Horn's suggestion that we call Shapiro and from a conversation with A. Manohar on a draft of this paper. V.L.T. thanks several colleagues from NSF and the University of Maryland for long conversations on the validity of the bounds of ref. \[3\].T he work of D.A.D. was supported in part by the US Department of Energy under grant DE-FG05-85ER40200.
