Illuminations: Lights, Identities, and the Society of Spectacle in the Late Middle Ages

Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceedingChapter

Abstract

From a perspective anchored in the social history of material objects, this chapter explores a varied typology of primary sources on lamps in late medieval Iberia. It highlights certain themes: first the notion of lights as spectacle brings with it a focus on the gaze (of travellers, neighbours, artists, inquisitors, servants, and others) in a propitious period for such gazing, including attention to attitudes to the visual and narratives of meaning. This inevitably raises questions concerning the materials of the artisans and their patronage. The theme of numerous identities (such as family identity) is also pertinent.
