Abstract

Intestinal pseudo-obstruction is a term which indicates repeated bouts of intestinal obstruction occurring in a patient in whom no local cause can be found. The condition may exist in association with certain underlying medical conditions or primarily without other disease states. The management of these cases presents considerable difficulties and the prognosis is guarded. The present report illustrates some of the problems encountered in the diagnosis and treatment of intestinal pseudo-obstruction and describes the successful response following the administration of an acetylcholine-esterase inhibitor, physostigmine.
