Abstract

This book contains 15 papers addressing impressions left upon landscape, through historical time, by the ideologies of religion, politics, church and the state. Examples are presented through history from Medieval times to the present day, and from such wide-ranging locations as the USA, Palestine, South Africa, India, and Germany. Topics covered include ideological influences upon early printed maps in Jerusalem, influence of ritual politics upon temple towns and Brahmin villages in Medieval kingdoms of south India, colonial influence upon landscape in Virginia and Dutch South Africa, ideological influences upon landscape in British Palestine, ideology and landscape planning in Germany, and the influences of artists upon national identity.
