Hydrodynamic collimation of gamma-ray-burst fireballs

Abstract

Evidence is given indicating that the huge apparent isotropic luminosities implied for some gamma ray burst (GRBs) are understood in terms of collimation of the fireball by an outer baryonic wind with more modest energetics. It is shown that the existence of the baryonic winds that envelope the baryon poor fireball is a logical consequence of the highly super-Eddington GRB luminosities from regions where the baryon mechanism for baryon suppression does not operate.
