Abstract

An optical-digital processor for morphological and nonlinear rank-order image processing is presented. It performs the following functions: First, digital threshold decomposition of a gray-scale input image into a cascade of binary slices; second, optical convolution of slices with a gray-scale kernel; and third, digital elementwise arithemtic and logic operations on the cascade of convolution results. A theorem on calculating the local histograms of weighted neighborhoods of an input gray-scale image is presented. It says that the local histogram of input image results from subtraction of convolution patterns of its two subsequent binary slices with a gray-scale structuring element.
