Hexagonal structure of large-scale Marangoni convection

Abstract

Three-dimensional surface tension driven convection in a horizontal liquid layer confined between poorly conducting boundaries is considered. In this case the horizontal scale of motion is much larger than the layer depth. In such circumstances the dynamics of the system is effectively described by a two-dimensional equation for the convection planform. It is shown that the preferred pattern of the planform is a hexagonal cell tesselation, as occurs when the condition of good thermal insulation is not met. The possible effects of drift flow on convection structure are also discussed.
