Abstract

To the Editor: Primary cancer of the liver in children is a rare condition. Fraumeni et al.1 have suggested an embryonic origin, because of the incidence of hepatoblastoma during infancy. Otten et al.2 have described hepatoblastoma in an infant whose mother had had contraceptive treatment during pregnancy. We observed a female infant, 15 months old, born to a 34-year-old woman. This was the mother's first pregnancy after 10 years of sterility. Before conception she was treated for a year with clomiphene citrate and Pergonal (lyophilized sterile follicle-stimulating hormone and luteinizing hormone). A mass in the infant's upper abdomen was noticed.
