Abstract
Treatment with alpha-methyldopa may result in the appearance of anti-erythrocyte antibodies and a positive Coombs test, and more rarely hemolytic anemia. Three cases of severe hemolytic anemia following the drug are described. The anti-erythrocyte antibody was of the IgG1 type and complement-independent. The anemia subsided after the drug was stopped.
