Abstract

Growth and survival of Lymnaea truncatula from the Netherlands and from Israel on either the native or reciprocal soil type were compared. Soil from Israel proved inferior to the Dutch in respect to growth characteristics of the snails. Similarly, snail maintenance on artificial support media proved inferior to that on natural soil and evinced the importance of the physical characteristics of the substrate. Infection with larval stages of the liver fluke, Fasciola hepatica, not only was inoffensive to the snails, but actually enhanced their growth compared to that of uninfected control snails.
