Abstract
The well known Lindemann criterion of melting is generalised for binary and ternary systems with full solubility in both the liquid and the solid states. The criterion, in spite of the fact that it is formulated for the solid phase only, gives a realistic prediction of the melting points for disordered alloys. Quantitative calculations of solubility limit for a BCC solid solution agrees with the empirical Hume-Rothery rule.
