Abstract

Previous studies have indicated that local hyperthermia applied to the prostate may be of considerable help in the relief of obstructive signs and clinical symptoms in patients with cancer of the prostate as well as in cases with benign hyperplasia and chronic abacterial prostatitis. The purpose of the present study was to conduct a prospective, randomized multicenter trial to evaluate the clinical benefit of this thermotherapy on patients suffering from benign enlargement (BPH). Of 140 patients who were treated, the majority obtained definite relief of obstructive symptoms and signs. Further studies are in progress to clarify various aspects of this new treatment modality and its potential value in clinical practice.
