Abstract

This article focuses on freehand sketching, as an important thinking tool, for the integration of structure and architecture. This tool is vital in different design phases but especially in the conceptual stage, where creativity is crucial. In an era of usage of advanced technologies, it is important to continue the development of freehand skills in parallel to these new technologies and not in contradiction with them. The article introduces a general background about structure and architecture along history and maps possible relations between them nowadays. Accordingly, different aspects of freehand sketching as a tool in design are introduced and various types of sketching are identified with their possible contribution to the design process. In addition, pedagogical aspects dealing with teaching of freehand sketching in structures design are brought.
