Abstract
The attempts so far to implement temporally-oriented, or historical, databases have been at best preliminary and ad hoc. Taking a more conceptual view, we outline the logical structure of TODBs, integrating external users' views with an underlying functional view of the data and ultimately with the database as physically implemented on some storage medium. This approach provides a concrete framework for the design and implementation of TODBs, in what we believe to be a coherent accumulation of the knowledge gained from diverse research efforts and experiences in this area. We are currently involved in a project that will apply this logical structure to the development of a prototype historical database management system within the context of the relational database model.
