FORCES AND MOMENTS ON A TRI-AXIAL ELLIPSOID IN POTENTIAL FLOW.

Abstract

An expansion for the reciprocal of the distance between two arbitrary points in space in terms of ellipsoidal harmonics has been developed and the image system of a point source exterior to the ellipsoid is derived. Expressions for the six added-mass coefficients of an ellipsoid are expressed in terms of tabulated functions. The Kirchhoff formula then yields expressions for the forces and the moments exerted by the fluid on the body undergoing motion with six degrees of freedom in an infinite fluid otherwise at rest. Also presented as an application is the calculation of the so-called ″horizontal buoyancy″ force in wind-tunnel measurements.
