Abstract
This paper presents a computation of the efficiency of excitation of the state B 2∑u+ in N2+, which is responsible for radiation in the 3914-Å band, by energetic electrons which are slowing down in a thick target. The computed efficiency includes corrections for the Auger effect. In addition, the corresponding fluorescent efficiency of soft x rays is estimated. The calculations appear to be in good agreement with the limited experimental data available. The method of computation is applicable to the treatment of other energy-exchange phenomena associated with the stopping of electrons in thick targets.
