Abstract

A review of salivary gland fine needle aspiration (FNA) is presented. The technical procedure is described and indications advantages and complications are discussed. A brief review of the cytological features of the more common lesions and some clues to the differential diagnosis are presented. The sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy of salivary gland FNA, which are comparable with that of frozen section analysis, make this technique a useful tool for preoperative diagnosis.
