Abstract

There are two types of fiber-optic sensing systems: indirect and direct. In direct sensors, the optics alone take care of the sensing of light to be analyzed outside the body. Indirect sensors incorporate a transducer, sometimes called an optode, at the distal end of the instrument. Each type can be used to monitor physical and chemical factors. Physical sensors respond to pressure and temperature, for example, and chemical sensors respond to chemical changes such as pH level. The article reviews each of these categories.
