We would like to thank Dr. E.-Kolodny (Tel-Aviv University) for valuable discussions, Drs. R. Bombach and J.P. Stadelmann (University ofBase1) for software assistance, and Dr. R. Hofmann-Sievert (CIBA-GEIGY A-G_, Basel) for a loan of equipment. This work was supported by grant No. 2.228-0.84 of the Swiss National Science Foundation and the Max-Geldner-Stiftung of the University of Base1

N2 - Efficient excited-state proton transfer was detected by a combination of laser spectroscopic techniques (laser-induced fluorescence, resonant two-photon ionization) in neutral microsolvent clusters α-naphthol·(NH3)n, which were synthesized and cooled in supersonic expansions. Excited-state zwitterions α-naphtholate-·(NH3)n·H+ are formed for n ≥ 4, but not for n = 1-3.
