N1 - Funding Information: The present excavation is a joint project of the Institute of Archaeology of Tel Aviv University (represented by David Ussishkin) and the British School of Archaeology in Jerusalem (represented by John Woodhead). The discoveries described above indicated the potential of the site for future excavation. It was therefore chosen for a long-term, systematic study, with a special emphasis on the period of the Kingdom of Israel, i.e., 10th-8th centuries RC.E. Two excavation seasons, each of six weeks, were carried out in 1990 (24 June-3 August) and 1991 (23 June-2 August). It was decided to publish from time to time preliminary reports of the excavation; they will appear alternately in TelA viv and Levant, the present report being the first. The excavations were supported by generous grants from the British Academy and the British School and by a generous contribution given by Mr. Leon Levy of New York to the Israel Exploration Society through P.E.F. Israel Endowment Inc. in New York. The excavations are also sponsored by the Israel Exploration Society, and by the Gilboa Regional Council. The Regional Council, and its head, Mr. Avraham Yariv, did their utmost to provide all possible help to the project. The core staff of the expedition consisted of David U ssishkin and Johp Woodhead (co-directors); Dr. Gabriel Barkay (in 1990), Yehudah Dagan, Paul Davies (in 1990), Tony Grey (in 1991) and Orna Zimhoni (area supervisors); Prof. Judith Hadley, Ian Hoad (in 1991), Hayah Eitan-Katz (in 1990), Dag Ordesson, Seong Park, and Prof. Phil Roberts (assistant area supervisors); Hadas Yarkoni-Regev (in 1990) and Nizan Sarig (in 1991) (recorders). Dr. Paul Croft participated in 1991, supervising the archaeo-environmental studies. Dr. Arlene Miller Rosen studied the geological aspects for a brief period in 1991. The following students acted as field assistants: Jonathan Bedford (in 1990-1991); Aasa Bengtsson (1990-1991); Tina Blomquist (in 1990-1991); Sanne Bojeson (in 1990-1991); Clive Farr (in 1991); Gordon Franz (in 1990); Blair Gadsby (in 1990-1991); Bjorn Hegstad (in 1991); Cecilia Hennir(in 1990-1991); Simon James (in 1990-1991); Leif Inge Johansson (in 1990-1991); Michael Juhntre (in 1990-1991); Amanda Kennedy (in 1991); Anders Lundbeeg (1990-1991); Anita Morrison (in 1990); Jan Mortensen (in 1990-1991); Neville Parker (in 1990); Henrik Pihl (in 1990-1991); Andres Reyes (in 1990); Tim Taylor (in 1990-1991) and Bjorn Wictor (in 1990-1991). About 80 to 100 volunteers, mostly scholars and students in the fields of archaeology, theology, biblical studies and related subjects, worked in the excavation at each stage. They came from twenty countries spread over five continents: Australia, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Finland, Germany, Great
