Abstract

A proteoglycan preparation from cartilaginous tissues of a patient with auriculoepiphyseal dysplasia (multiple epiphyseal dysplasia) was compared to proteoglycan from a normal human control, using a radioimmunoassay which measured the structural features of the core protein in the region of the antigenic determinant site and its "helper" regions and an affinity test for the hyaluronate-binding region. The data indicated that the patient's proteoglycan was defective in the core protein region of the antigenic determinant site or its "helper" regions, whereas the hyaluronate-binding region was normal.
