Abstract

Nutrition plays a pivotal role in IBD in several ways: (1) breast feeding has been implicated as protective, whereas the intake of certain nutrients may be risk factors in the development of IBD; (2) malnutrition and growth failure (in children) are common in IBD and necessitate nutritional support, and (3) in patients with Crohn's disease, nutritional therapy can induce remission, and can help maintain remission and withdrawal of steroids.
