Abstract
We have found that pindolol also exhibited a long-term inhibitory action on PTH secretion in hypertensive patients. It is a well-recognized fact that beta blockage results in a sodium retention and hypervolemia. In such a state of volume expansion, PTH levels were shown to increase. The decrease in PTH secretion found in our study tends to negate any hemodynamic effect as the cause of reduction in PTH levels by a beta blocker. Thus, pindolol, like other beta blockers, is an active inhibitor of PTH secretion, and its action is not related to hemodynamic changes.
