Abstract
The 1994 earthquake that jolted the Los Angeles area provided an unusual opportunity to clarify the relationship between stress and the triggering of sudden cardiac death. We found a significant rise in the number of sudden cardiac deaths on the day of the earthquake, followed by a low incidence during the six days thereafter. Our findings suggest that emotional stress can trigger sudden cardiac death in people who are vulnerable to such an event.
