We arc indebted to lianan Horowitz for his expert lrcflnicaf assistance.t o the staff of the mechanical workshop oi rhe Chemistry Departwent for their skilful construction of the pulsed nozzle and to hlenahem Levin for help ad guidance in the construction of the elec-rronics. This researchw as supported by the United States Army rhrough its European ResearchO ffice and by the United States-lsrael Binational Science Foundation. Jerusalem (Grant No. 2641). We are grateful to Professor D.11.L evy for pre-publication information.

N2 - The absorption spectra, the fluorescence excitation spectra and the relative fluorescence quantum yields of trans-stilbene in planar supersonic jets were determined for excess vibrational energies EV = 0-5000 cm-1 above the origin of S1. The non-radiative decay rates reveal an onset at EV ≈ 900 cm-1, exhibit the erosion of vibrational photoselectivity for isomerization at EV = 900-5000 cm-1 and show a linear dependence on EV for EV = 1500-5000 cm-1.
