Abstract

Shakespeare's Iago is presented as Hell's master therapist. His ''treatment'' of Othello gives him occasion to exhibit an astounding variety of influence techniques, many of which have been rediscovered by present day's most illustrious therapists. Iago shows also an ability to integrate treatment techniques into an organic whole, so that at each moment the atmosphere, quality of relationship, emotional charge, and tempo of therapy are suited to his changing goals. The play enriches our therapeutic skills, regardless of the difference between Iago's goals and ours.
