Abstract

The main tasks and basic algorithmic tools for digital processing of optical and similar 2D and 3D signals are outlined with emphasis on design problems of optical computers and neural-like networks. The most important basic operations of rank transformations are identified. Typical examples of rank transformations are smoothing algorithms, algorithms for local contrast enhancement, and algorithms for edge extraction.
