N2 - A semiclassical model applied to backward inelastic pion-nucleus scattering reproduces the general features of the (,) data and suggests a way of extracting the fractions involving pion multiple scattering, nucleon final state interactions, and unperturbed quasifree scattering. In order to fit the knockout (+,+p) coincidence data, the free NN cross sections must be reduced by a factor which rapidly increases with A, implying a long mean free path for the outgoing nucleon in heavy nuclei. NUCLEAR REACTIONS Inclusive (,) and coincidence (,N) in C, Al, Fe, Nb, Bi; calculated semiclassically. Reduced NN cross section in nuclei.
