Abstract
In this paper, an analysis is made of the relationship between the two different definitions of surface tension that are given in the works of Gibbs and Boruvka. The physical meanings of the two definitions are examined, and considerations in favor of the Gibbs definition are cited. Expressions for the surface tension and moments of the surface are derived within the framework of an approach based on local thermodynamics. It is shown that with this approach there is no need to use the concept of excess thermodynamic quantities.
