Abstract

Brittle fracture behavior of plate with a doubly periodic system of circular voids is considered. The numerical efficiency of the suggested novel analysis method allowed predicting theoretically the fracture toughness of voided material in terms of the tensile strength of the solid one. The obtained results are implemented for the design of light-weight voided plates with optimal fracture properties. In particular, the optimal value of voids radius for a given distance between their centers is found. The method can be applied for the design of crack resistant two-dimensional periodic materials with more complicated morphology.
